Prevention is priceless: The small checks that stop big claims

Every year, our Private Clients claims team handles hundreds of avoidable claims — often caused not by sudden disasters, but by the slow consequences of things we meant to check but never quite got around to.
These claims aren’t just costly — they’re disruptive, inconvenient and often emotionally draining. And as brokers, you're perfectly placed to remind clients that a few simple checks can make all the difference.
Here’s our seasonal reminder of the things we forget to do… and often wish we hadn’t.
🔥 Fire prevention
Have chimneys professionally swept before lighting log burners or open fires — especially after long periods of inactivity.
Take extra care with candles, particularly during the festive season. Blow them out when you leave the room.
Check Christmas lights for signs of damage or fraying wires, and never leave them on unattended.
💧 Water damage prevention
Inspect shower trays and bath seals — even a slow drip can cause thousands in hidden damage over time.
Check under baths and behind shower panels for signs of moisture, leaks or staining.
Keep drains clear, especially in properties with off-mains sewerage. Make sure systems are regularly serviced and functioning properly.
Bleed radiators and inspect them for signs of corrosion or weeping joints.
Service boilers, heating systems and AGAs annually to reduce the risk of breakdown or leaks.
Inspect oil tanks for cracks or deterioration, and ensure lines are protected from accidental damage.
